Are Spanish goats a real breed? I thought that was a term used for brush goats.

The name does cause some confusion because for years people have referred to goats that were wild as "brush or Spanish goats" because they survived by eating things domesticated animals would not. Spanish goats are a breed. They were first brought to this country in the 1500's by Spanish Explorers. Many were abandoned or escaped into the wild. Through 100's of years they adapted to this country and became so independent that at one time there were more than 3 million of them roaming wild. There were more than one million in Texas alone. The Spanish goats were the first meat goats here and are still an excellent animal for eating. They are easy to raise and will forage on brush or graze on grass. They adapt easily and quickly. They kid with extremely few problems and almost always without human help or intervention. They require almost no hoof work. Like all goats they are herd animals and need the company of other goats or livestock. They get along well around cattle.

If they are so great why don't you see more of them?

Great Question! 100% Spanish goats have become almost extinct. Because they are easy to raise, people began using them to cross breed with other goats in an effort to develop the perfect meat goat. This cross breeding still goes on today especially with the Bore goat breed. The Bores are a South African breed. There are so few 100% Spanish goats left that the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy has placed them on their "Watch" list. They are close to becoming an endangered species. That is truly a shame.

I noticed on your website that the baby goats seem to have different colors. Is that unusual?

No, Not at all. When you think of Bore goats you think instantly of the Brown and white colors mostly seen in Bore herds. Spanish goats are born with different colors and markings. You can pick out the appearance that you like and keep breeding stock that will eventually give you a herd with a particular look if that is what you want to do. There was a gentleman in Texas that raised Spanish goats for thirty years. When he passed away, every goat in his herd was pure black. I started my herd with 100% pure black Spanish stock from that blood line. My goal however is to allow mother nature to paint these goats any color she desires. They are all beautiful animals to me.

A neighbor told me that you deliver goats as soon as they are weaned and on solid food. Is that true?

Yes it is. If you reserve your animal ahead of time we will deliver it within twenty miles of our farm for free. We will deliver outside that radius but have to charge a small fee to cover our gas and vehicle operation. To reserve a goat please contact us by phone or email for an appointment to see the stock and choose your animal. There is a $50.00 reservation fee to pay at that time. You pay the balance when delivered or you pick your animal up. We encourage people to come and choose as early in the spring as possible. We have to decide within a couple of months of their birth whether or not to wether the males.

How much do you charge? Do you have a set fee?

Yes, we do have a set fee. This year (2010) we are charging $220.00 for bucks and bucklings and $120.00 for wethered males. We are still herd building so we do not have any doelings or does for sale.
